AGNOSTOS THEOS

Roman Deities

The Unknown Gods

A generic conglomeration of unidentified deities. Those superstitious Romans were very nervous about accidentally omitting a god from their prayers. Particularly when visiting somewhere new which might have any amount of parochial gods.

To avoid offending the locals during prayer time, Roman visitors would give a boisterous cheer to the Agnostos Theos. Any deity not otherwise invoked by name could content itself with this honorable mention.
