The Gods and Spirits of Latvia

VELNS

Latvian Evil God

Devilishly dumb Latvian Devil

He is the adversary of Dievs. But unlike Satan or similar Gods of Evil, he is more of a low-budget trickster than a frightful Lord of Badness.

It seems that once upon a time he was co-equal with Dievs and even helped him create the Universe. But the pagan good times ended when Christianity arrived in Latvia. Velns was reduced to the status of a moustache-twirling naughty rogue. Instead of an evil genius he became a dismally stupid villain.

We imagine him dressed in tweed and propping up a bar somewhere having failed to trick an orphan out of their inheritance.
