YAKSHAS

Hindu Nature Spirits

Mighty morphing magical nature spirits

They started off as minor deities but, due to cut-backs, were demoted to minor spirits instead. However, they are not doing too badly — they are handsome, prosperous and having a fine old time.

Like the Nymphs of Greek and Roman mythology, they come in several varieties, and make their homes in grottos, caves and trees — and occasionally magical flying cities. Unlike the Nymphs, however, they can change their shape and morph into anything they like. Also, there are male and female ones. The females are called Yakshis.

Warning: You don’t want to get on the wrong side of a Yaksha when you cross their territory. They might morph into something you really don’t wish to encounter.
