TARAKA

Hindu Demoness

Also known as Tadaka, Tataka, Thataka

A Demoness with very unsociable habits

She was one of the Asuras and had some pretty awful personal habits. Biting fingernails is one thing, but biting the tops off mountains and spitting them at people was not an endearing practice.

Rama and Lakshmana were given the task of persuading her to desist. They lopped off various bits: her ears to stop her listening, her nose to stop her tracing by scent, a few arms to stop her throwing the really heavy mountain bits but still she persisted.

In the end Rama had to shoot her with an arrow, although it went against the grain of his chivalry.
