CHITRAGUPTA

Hindu Judgmental Deity

Underworld Morality Judge and Filing Clerk

He is the assistant of Yama, God of the Dead. His main job is to keep the records of vices and virtues so that new arrivals can be judged. Is the file marked ‘H’ for Heaven or Hell?

There is a festival in Chitragupta’s honor during the full moon. It is called the Chitra Purnima and is supposed to make him more well-disposed towards mortals.

The theory goes that the more praise he gets from the living, the more easy-going he’ll be with the dead. If you are contemplating death or planning a trip to the Underworld, we strongly recommend sending him a few lavish prayers in advance.
