BHAGÎRATHA

Hindu legendary mortal

Also known as Bhagîratha

World-Saving Sage

He came up with a plan to divert the Ganges river from Heaven to Earth. This stopped world destruction by washing everything away, and cured a very serious drought.

His diverting feat was accomplished with the help of Shiva who had to take the weight on his head so it was divided and diverted into seven streams.

After this civil engineering feat Bhagîratha went on to father 60,000 sons so that enormous crowds could turn out and worship on the banks of the Ganges.
