AVATAR

Hindu concept

Also known as Avatâra

Deities in disguise

This is the camouflaged form of a deity sneaking down to Earth in anonymous mode.

Sometimes when visiting the planet you just need to go incognito, so if you can wear a completely different body it all helps.

This can result in all kinds of mistaken identity shenanigans. Did you know that Clark Kent is really Superman? That sort of thing. Gasps of surprise from Dr Watson: ‘Is that really you Holmes?’

Buddha does this sort of thing quite a lot but Vishnu is the best known, having ten special costume changes.

Humans catch onto everything eventually. Now the internet is full of Avatars of people pretending to be rich, handsome, sexy — or normal.
