There was subterfuge by the archdeacon to replace him with a prelate of his own choice. Our Saint went to Rome to argue his case but the Pope turned him down.

So he led a sad life of quiet prayer and moping for seven years until his replacement snuffed it. There was also a new Pope. William still had many friends and was implored to try again. This time Rome gave him the thumbs up.

On his return, his enemies forbade him to enter the city. However at the wooden bridge which was the official entry to York, a huge multitude had turned up to greet him.

This mass of humanity caused the bridge to collapse and many fell into the River Ouse. Our Saint made Holy Signs and not a soul was hurt or drowned. Who would dare to stop his progress now?

He was back in charge — but not for long. Shortly afterwards he died of a fever.
