St. WENCESLAUS

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Slovakia and the Czech Republic

Forget the ‘Good King’ festive song — he was a Bavarian Duke. But a good one nonetheless.

The sort of Christianity he helped to promote was full of reforms for banning torture and the destruction of gallows.

Sadly he had an evil brother named Boleslas who, under the pretext of a ‘Do come and visit, we would love to see you’ invitation, had him clubbed to death on his arrival. His family had a lot of that sort of thing. See St. Ludmila.
