St. TURIBIUS OF MOGROVEJO

Christian Saint

Also known as Toribio Alfonso De Mogrovejo

Patron Saint of South American Bishops

Spanish Priest and Missionary.

He was forty-two when he was sent out to Peru. What a task awaited him. So many abuses of the indigenous population to put right — and a diocese of 18,000 square miles!

He studied the Quechua dialects to help with conversion and lobbied hard for better roads.

This was a little late for himself though — he died on the road in a small village after falling sick.
