St. THOMAS OF VILLANOVA
Christian Saint
Also known as Tomás García Y Martínez
Archbishop of Valencia
On first joining the Augustinians, he took his vows of poverty very seriously. Helping the needy was always top priority.
When he was elected Archbishop he turned up on foot wearing a tatty old habit. He then sold off the sumptuous furnishings of his new position to raise money for hospitals.
He had a special interest in foundlings and rewarded servants who brought them to his attention, after which he kept a check on their progress.
As he was dying, he even gave away his bed to the local jail — with the provision that he’d like to borrow it until the moment he was called away.
