She had always wanted to go to America, but there were many obstacles to overcome first. Such as the French Revolution, during which nuns were expelled from the convents.

She spent the time ministering to prisoners and later tried to form a mission of her own, but this failed. Eventually she got into the Society of the Sacred Heart but still had to wait fourteen years for her chance.

Finally, aged forty-nine, she set off for St Louis, Missouri — where it was rough and tough pioneer stuff.

With life in a log cabin and survival paramount it took another ten years before they managed to get some schools going.

She then traveled to Kansas to have a go at converting the Potwatomie Tribe, but she couldn’t understand a word they said. They in turn referred to her as ‘The Woman Who Always Prays’ although they hadn’t a clue why.
