St. RONAN OF KILMARONEN

Christian Saint

Also known as Roman Of Kilmaronen, Rudan Of Kilmaronen

Bishop with a Holy Well at Innerleithen in Peebleshire, which in turn is in Scotland

He had a confrontation with the Devil, whom he whacked good and proper with his staff. In commemoration he has the celebratory Cleikum Ceremonies dedicated to him.

These ceremonies are some sort of games which involve whacking (‘cleiking’) things — or people. Who knows what sort of activities they get up to in these places?

Sir Walter Scott was patron of the well and perhaps he could tell us. But his books seem so amazingly tedious and floridly over-romanticized they are not on our reading shortlist. They are on our long list — at the far end.
