St. PETER CLAVER

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Colombia and Missionaries

Spanish Jesuit Missionary.

His specialty was saving Negro slaves. He would visit plantations, and wait at the docks for new arrivals to pounce on.

He aimed to supply what spiritual comfort he could to the abused and distressed slaves. This invariably meant ridding them of their old beliefs and converting them to Christianity. Amazingly, he managed to convert about a third of a million of them — without the aid of television.

The slave owners did not like being pushed to the back of the queue for absolution, but God’s representative told them if they didn’t lump it God was not going to like it one little bit.
