St. NORBERT

Christian Saint

Bishop of Magdeburg

As a fun-loving canon it was not until he was thrown from his horse during a flash of lightning that he heard the voice of God telling him to pull his socks up.

So he gave all his goods to the poor, and walked barefoot in the snow. He then founded the Premonstratensian Order (don’t ask).

When he was appointed Bishop and came to take up his new post, the porter mistook him for a beggar. Our Saint refused to accept a fawning apology, saying: “’No — you were right first time!”
