St. MECHTILDIS

Christian Saint

Also known as Mechtildis Of Edelstetten

Unexpectedly stern Abbess of Edelstetten

A surprise choice as she was young, inexperienced and from a well-to-do background.

Hooray, thought the nuns who had been running wild and putting pleasure above piety in this neglected convent. They were in for a shock — it was Discipline with a big D, harsh and unrelenting.

A rebellion ensued, and was quickly subdued — any nun who persevered was forced to pack her rags and go.

Prospects for penniless ex-nuns in the outside world was even more grim than in the convent, where at least they had a roof overhead and free meals.
