St. MARGUERITE BOURGEOYS

Christian Saint

French Canadian sister and Founder of Schools

To move from France to the New World colony of Montreal in the middle of the wilds was a challenge and a half. Huts in the woods with primitive pioneer conditions included attacks by Iroquois.

She and a handful of sisters persevered, and when some well-meaning Bishop thought she and the sisters should be cloistered for their own protection she just scoffed at him.

He was told in no uncertain terms exactly what they did need, including more sisters and equipment so they could get on with things.

He wisely acquiesced. Montreal was on its way.
