Patriarch of Alexandria and distributor of alms

A rich widower, he became Mr Charity bestowing 80,000 pieces of gold on hospitals, monasteries and the poor.

He also ensured fair trading and the checking of weights used by merchants.

As he gave it all away, there was no call for trying to force camels through the eyes of needles where he was concerned.
