St. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Preachers, Public Speakers, Orators and Speechmakers

Bishop of Constantinople known as ‘Golden Mouth’.

After some scandal involving a woman or an illegitimate child, he was forced to crawl on all fours as a penance.

We suspect he blamed womankind, as when he was in power he preached against the vanity of women — something which did not endear him the Empress of the Day who managed to get him banished in 403.

He was dragged around various distant locations to prevent him drumming up any support or using his oratorical skills, and he died in exile.
