Asked to help open a school for poor boys, he gave more than was bargained for.
Appalled at how useless the teachers were, he started the Brothers of Christian Schools, recruiting real teachers who were not priests.
He made many educational reforms such as abolishing teaching in Latin. He also introduced group classes and teacher-training schemes.
