St. GRIMBALD

Christian Saint

Also known as Grimbald Of Winchester, Grimbold, Grimwald

Monk and scholar

He came from Rheims to England at the request of King Alfred to help put the country back on the scholastic route after the ravages of the Danes.

Aged 60 and having to learn a new language, our Saint worked wonders: translating Latin texts into Anglo-Saxon, expanding libraries and becoming Professor of Divinity at Oxford.
