St. EUPHROSYNE
Christian Saint
Also known as Euphrosyne Of Alexandria
Cross-dressing monkess
To avoid marriage she dressed herself as a man and joined a monastery near Alexandria, becoming Brother Smaragdus.
So good was her disguise, and so convincing a monk was she, that her own father went to confession for many years without realizing that the confessor was his own daughter.
One day she fell ill. With death approaching, she finally revealed her identity to her astonished dad. To prevent the awful scandal should a monk with woman’s bits be discovered dead in bed, they swapped places.
She left the monastery, while her father became Brother Smaragdus in her place. So her secret identity would be safe to this day, if we didn’t know it.
P.S. We have mislaid her dates. Or may never have had them to start with.
