St. DRITHELM

Christian Saint

Also known as Dryhthelm

Returned from the dead to become a monk at Melrose in Northumbria

He scared the wits out of his wife and the mourners when he told them he had come back to lead a very different life. Having seen Hell at first-hand, his descriptions of the place were a unique insight and very popular.

It was not all flames and furnaces, he explained. You also got tossed into freezing ice. When he chose to recite prayers standing in an icy river he would declare: “I have felt greater cold”.
