St. COLMAN OF KILMACDUAGH

Christian Saint

Also known as Colman-Macduagh

Chosen to be a bishop, he ran off to hide as a hermit in the mountains of County Clare

Here he lived with a mouse who nibbled his ear in time to wake him up for the rooster trained to announce time for prayer.

He also kept a bluebottle to mark his place in the holy manuscripts. Luckily there were no books; the fly would not have survived as a bookmark.

Eventually he accepted his responsibilities and built two churches and a monastery.
