St. CAEDMON

Christian Saint

Father of English Sacred Poetry

He was a cowherd from near Whitby who started writing songs but was too embarrassed to sing at parties.

A voice in a dream told him to aim his verses Godwards, and hey ho, St. Hilda heard him.

Suddenly it was goodbye herd and off to Whitby Monastery, and before he was done he had also translated the whole of the Bible into Anglo-Saxon.
