St. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO
Christian Saint
Patron Saint of Beer Brewers and Brewing. Also Printers.
The Father of the Church and Bishop of Hippo in Africa (now Algeria).
His autobiographical ‘Confessions’ encompass the fact that his youth was far from virtuous. He indulged in beer to a most unGodly degree and was not even baptized until 387. Luckily for him his mother, St. Monica, convinced him to change his ways.
He studied law in Rome and Milan and opened a school of rhetoric, preaching every day. He never stopped writing.
He turned out a further two hundred and thirty-two titles, including his ‘City of God’ epic which ran to quite a few volumes.
Due to his former association with alcohol, he’s now renowned as the Patron of Beer Brewers.
