As a lowly monk, he had been sent by Emperor Otto III to Trier to try and convert some of the Slavic tribes

He was lucky to escape with his life when most of the missionaries were massacred.

Even as Archbishop of Magdeburg, he never gave up trying to wend his way towards the pagan Wends who lived across the river.
