He also opposed the slave trade, and actually bought vast numbers of slaves in order to free them. Or at least to sell them to right-thinking Christians instead of those nasty African heathens. Presumably he thought that if we have to have slaves, they may as well be Christian ones.
He supported the missionary missions of St. Boniface of Mainz and did many goodly things, including translating The Dialogues of Pope Gregory I into Greek.
