St. JACOPONE OF TODI

Christian Saint

Also known as Fra Jacopone Da Todi, Jacopo Dei Benedetti

Franciscan lay brother

He went off the rails and did idiot penances running around in a bridle with an empty saddle, but settled down when he joined the Franciscans where he produced popular mystical religious poetry.

An outspoken critic, he upset the current Pope and was imprisoned for five years. He just carried on with his poetry until the Pope died and he was released.
