St. MILBURGA
Christian Saint
Also known as Milburga Of Wenlock, Milburgh, Mildburh
She has a village in Shropshire named after her — with, of course, a Holy Well
A well-bred Christian lady out for a quiet ride on her horse, she was set upon by pagan ruffians out hunting with hounds.
They chased her for two full days through wild countryside before she fell scratched, bleeding and exhausted to the ground. And as blood from her injuries splatted on the earth? wait for it? a spring sprang forth.
But when the hounds arrived at the spring, she and her horse had left the scene and the hounds could no longer follow the scent. Rumors of miraculous levitation abound.
Perhaps the Saint and the horse gulped down great refreshing draughts which gave them the strength to flee. Except that doesn’t explain the spring.
Meanwhile the hounds were lost and hopeless — and also very thirsty too. So it all turned out well at the Well in the end.
