Why saints?
A very good reason. It’s hard to identify with an awe-inspiring Mono God.
Humans have always wanted spiritual assistance nearer to their heart. Something or someone to identify with and approach. As God’s go-betweens, the saints are reassuringly human, full of flaws and foibles.
There is a saint for every location and occasion. You can have your own patron saint. Saints have holy wells and work miracles as they become — to the untrained eye — demi-deities in their own right. It was the saints, angels and holy artifacts that helped draw pagans to Christianity.
Saints can be sad, mad, glad, tragic, magic, self-seeking, self-effacing, holier-than-thou, popish and resplendent or hermits that beggar description. Having embarked upon the laborious task of portrayal, we will do our best to make it a labor of love if not necessarily devotion — and to cut out the turgid and boring bits beloved by theologians.
‘The saints preserve us’ as the saying goes — and at Godchecker we have been asked many times to preserve the saints. We are not trying to compete with Butler’s Lives of the Saints or any Papal Dedications. We wish this to remain at a light-hearted level. The saints are quite capable of holding their own; they have been doing it for centuries. Bear in mind the saints were once mortal like you, give or take a miracle or two and unlimited faith.
Please note. Life and death dates can be vague approximations. Some Feast Days have eluded us, and some saints have more than one. As ever, corrections are always welcome.
